Avenida Building incident: No fatalities as Nairobi County leads emergency response on Moi Avenue

Nairobi County’s Fire and Rescue Services activated emergency protocols, secured the site and coordinated initial rescue operations, with all 24 workers accounted for and four injured.

Nairobi City County’s Fire and Rescue Services swiftly activated emergency response protocols following an incident at Avenida Building along Moi Avenue, where four workers were injured during planned demolition works, with no fatalities reported.

The emergency teams responded to an alert at approximately 12.11am, securing the site and coordinating initial rescue operations before handing over incident command to the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) as part of a multi-agency response.

The incident occurred last evening at Avenida Building, Nairobi Block 28/285, in Nairobi Central Ward, Starehe Sub-County, during planned structural demolition to prepare the site for redevelopment.

A total of 24 workers were reported to have been at the site when the incident occurred. Four sustained injuries, with three receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, according to a situation report issued by the County Executive Committee Member for Built Environment.

The county’s Fire and Rescue Services cordoned off the area as emergency teams launched search and rescue operations to establish whether anyone remained trapped beneath the debris.

Comprehensive primary and secondary searches, including the deployment of canine search teams, were completed by 1.50am.

A subsequent personnel accountability exercise confirmed that all 24 workers had been accounted for, with no fatalities reported as of 12.30pm on Saturday.

Machinery has since been deployed to clear debris and secure the affected area as response teams continue their operations.

The county said a structural safety assessment would be conducted before any further activity is permitted at the site to establish its safety and protect workers and members of the public.

Further updates are expected as the multi-agency team concludes its assessments.

The incident underscores the importance of strict safety precautions during demolition and redevelopment works, particularly in Nairobi’s busy central business district, where construction activities take place close to businesses, pedestrians and neighbouring buildings.
