The Kenya Red Cross has issued a public safety advisory as heavy rains continue to pound Nairobi and several other parts of Kenya, increasing the risk of flooding in many areas.
In a message shared on its official X account, the humanitarian organization urged residents to remain cautious as emergency teams continue conducting rescue operations in affected regions.
“As we continue with search and rescue operations across affected areas, you can help make our work easier by following these flood safety tips and avoiding risky areas,” the organization stated.
The agency emphasized that public cooperation is critical in preventing further emergencies during the ongoing rains.
“Your safety is our priority,” the statement added, while also reminding the public that help is available through its emergency hotline.
According to the safety advisory shared by the organization, residents living in flood-prone areas should evacuate immediately to elevated areas when water levels begin to rise. The organization warned that even small amounts of moving water can be dangerous.
“Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, while one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away,” the advisory cautioned.
The agency also advised households in flooded homes to switch off electricity at the main switch to prevent electrocution and avoid contact with downed power lines or muddy waters where electrical lines may have fallen.
Motorists were also warned against driving through flooded sections or crossing submerged bridges, noting that strong currents can easily carry vehicles away.
In addition, residents moving through flooded areas were advised to use a stick to test the depth of water and to avoid activities near rivers and streams during the heavy rains.
To stay informed, the humanitarian body encouraged Kenyans to follow updates through radio and television stations for information on weather conditions and flooded areas.
“Listen to Radio/TV stations to stay updated on the rains and flooded areas,” the organization advised.
The Kenya Red Cross also reminded the public that emergencies can be reported through its toll-free line 1199, urging citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as the rains persist.
