The Chairman of Kenya’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 Local Organising Committee, Nicholas Musonye, has reassured that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are ready to jointly host the prestigious continental football tournament.
Musonye said preparations in the three countries are progressing well and there is no reason to doubt East Africa’s ability to host AFCON 2027.
His remarks come amid concerns and ongoing discussions over the pace of preparations, particularly the construction and renovation of key infrastructure, including stadiums, training facilities, transport networks and other services required during the tournament.
Musonye, who also served as chairman of the Local Organising Committee for CHAN 2025, stressed that the experience gained from organising that tournament will help ensure the successful preparation and hosting of AFCON 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, Musonye said Africa and the world at large should have confidence in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania’s ability to host the tournament.
“I want to assure Africa, and I want to assure the world, that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are ready to host AFCON,” Musonye said.
His remarks are aimed at easing concerns over the possibility of the tournament being moved from East Africa because of challenges associated with preparations.
The three nations were awarded the rights to jointly host Africa’s biggest football bonanza, marking a historic moment for the East African region.
According to Musonye, preparations are ongoing, with the three host nations committed to meeting the requirements set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before the tournament begins.
AFCON 2027 is expected to be a major event for East African football, with fans from across Africa and beyond expected to travel to the region to witness the tournament.
Attention is now focused on the implementation of infrastructure projects and other key preparations, as the host nations seek to ensure that everything is completed on time and meets the required continental standards.
