KenyaTrack Survey puts Githinji ‘Tropical’ ahead in the Mathira 2027 race

Peter Githinji “Tropical”has taken an early lead in the unfolding Mathira 2027 parliamentary contest, emerging at the apex of a tightly contested four-horse race, according to a KenyaTrack opinion survey.

Githinji commands 35 per cent of projected voter support, placing him six percentage points ahead of his closest challenger, Solomon Maina “Solo”, who registers 29

Eric Wamumbi occupies third position with 19 per cent, while Muriithi Ndagita trails with eight per cent. A further nine per cent of respondents remain undecided, leaving a sizeable reservoir of voters whose eventual preference could alter the current political arithmetic.

The findings portray a competitive electoral landscape rather than a runaway contest, with the frontrunner yet to consolidate majority support. Githinji’s 35 per cent means that nearly two-thirds of those surveyed either favour another candidate or remain undecided.

Maina’s 29 per cent places him within striking distance of the frontrunner, with the six-point margin leaving considerable latitude for the race to shift as campaigns intensify. His second-place showing positions him as the principal challenger in the current survey.
Wamumbi, despite trailing the two leading candidates, commands a substantial 19 per cent support base. His showing keeps him firmly within the competitive matrix and gives him room to broaden his appeal as the political contest evolves.

Ndagita, with eight per cent, occupies fourth position but remains within a race characterised by fluid voter preferences. His principal challenge will be to expand his support base and bridge the 11-point deficit separating him from Wamumbi.

The nine per cent undecided bloc could prove pivotal. Its size gives the candidates considerable scope to recalibrate their campaigns, sharpen their messages and court voters who have yet to commit to a particular contender.

The KenyaTrack survey was conducted between September 15 and October 3, 2026, through telephonic interviews involving adults aged 18 and above in both rural and urban areas of Mathira.

A total of 2,349 respondents were sampled across the constituency, with the sample distributed proportionately according to population size across all wards. The survey reports a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points at a 95 per cent confidence level.

The poll offers a snapshot of the current political landscape rather than a definitive forecast of the 2027 outcome. KenyaTrack notes that changing voter priorities, candidate visibility, grassroots mobilisation, campaign messaging and other political developments could significantly reshape the standings.

For now, Githinji holds the advantage, but his lead remains vulnerable in a contest where Maina is within six points, Wamumbi commands a sizeable constituency and nine per cent of voters are still undecided.

The emerging picture is therefore unmistakable: Mathira is shaping up as a four-horse race, with no candidate having yet secured an unassailable political advantage.
