KIAMBU: Six people drown in a well during song and dance while en route to a wedding

At least six people have died in a drowning incident in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

A police report filed at Kihunguro Police Post indicates that the deceased were part of a group headed to a wedding ceremony within Kihunguro area on Saturday, August 19.

They however made a stop at one of their friends’ home at around 11am not knowing tragedy awaited them.

“They made a stopover at a friend’s residential plot about 50 metres west of Kihunguro Police Post, started singing and dancing on a concrete-covered water well,” read part of the police report.

The cover allegedly collapsed due to the weight of the jubilated victims, leading to drowning of over 11 people.

Emergency responders within Ruiru rushed to the scene and rescued 17 victims including two children who were rushed to Ruiru Hospital for medical attention.

“One baby girl who was retrieved was confirmed dead shortly afterward,” added the report.

Police officers, fire brigade and medical are currently at the scene as rescue operations continue. The incident led to immediate cancellation of the wedding.
