Donation to support children’s welfare and daily needs as the authority calls for greater corporate involvement in rescue centres.
Children at the Nairobi Children Rescue Centre are set to benefit from improved welfare support following a KSh500,000 donation of essential items from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
The donation, made under KPA’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, targets the daily needs and comfort of children at the facility, which provides care and protection for vulnerable children.
Speaking on behalf of the KPA Chief Executive Officer, the authority’s Manager for Corporate Communication, Jones Buchere, said supporting vulnerable groups was part of the institution’s broader responsibility to contribute to national development.
Buchere said the centre was selected following an assessment, with the donation intended to improve the children’s living conditions.
“Giving every child an equal chance is an investment in the future of our nation,” he said, adding that KPA remained committed to initiatives that address the needs of disadvantaged members of society.

He said the authority had supported more than 60 infrastructure projects across the country since 2000, including the construction and improvement of dispensaries, laboratories, libraries, dormitories and rescue centres.
Among the institutions that have previously benefited from the programme are Machakos Girls Rescue Centre, Jawabu Rehabilitation Centre and Kisii Special School for the Deaf.
Buchere said the authority’s social investment initiatives were guided by its core value of care and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
He also commended the centre’s caregivers for providing a supportive environment for the children under their care.

Nairobi Children Rescue Centre head Margaret Kagwiria welcomed the donation, saying it would help improve the welfare and comfort of the children.
Kagwiria called on other corporate organisations to support rescue centres, noting that partnerships between public institutions and private entities could help address the needs of vulnerable children.
The donation comes amid broader calls for organisations to complement government efforts in providing social protection and improving the welfare of disadvantaged groups.
Meanwhile, KPA is scheduled to hold a corporate golf tournament at VetLab Sports Club in Nairobi on October 16, bringing together customers, stakeholders and government agencies to strengthen partnerships and promote engagement.
The tournament is part of the authority’s stakeholder engagement activities, as it continues to pursue collaboration with institutions across different sectors.
