The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully treated an injured male lion found in the Olkeju Rongai area of the Maasai Mara National Reserve after visitors reported his condition.
The lion, known as Kidong’oe or ‘Half Tail’, is a member of the Rongai Rockers (R5) coalition and the son of the famous lion Olobor.
According to KWS, veterinary officers found the lion with a deep puncture wound on the neck, believed to have been caused by a buffalo during a failed hunting attempt.
He also had fresh bite wounds on his head and flanks, indicating he had recently been involved in a territorial fight as the Rongai Rockers battled for control of the Rekero Pride.
The KWS Mara Veterinary Unit cleaned and treated the injuries, stitched the most serious wounds, and administered long-acting antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication before safely reviving the animal from anaesthesia.
KWS said Kidong’oe responded well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
The wildlife agency thanked visitors who quickly reported the injured lion, saying their swift action enabled the veterinary team to intervene in time.
“Kidong’oe’s scars tell the story of a lion doing what lions do, hunting, defending territory, and fighting for survival. Thanks to the visitors who promptly reported his condition and the swift response of the KWS Mara Veterinary Unit, this chapter ends with a second chance,” KWS said.
