A political storm is brewing in Makueni after a nominated MCA came under growing criticism from residents and local leaders over what they described as disrespectful and divisive remarks directed at NEDP Party Leader Mike Mbuvi Sonko.

The leaders and residents called on the MCA to withdraw his remarks and apologise to Sonko, arguing that political leaders have a constitutional right to belong to or establish political parties of their choice.

The controversy follows the MCA’s call for Sonko to fold the National Economic and Development Party (NEDP) and instead support Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

But Sonko has maintained that supporting Kalonzo does not require him to abandon his political party, arguing that political parties are vehicles through which people organise around shared ideologies and interests.

Sonko has also reiterated his support for Kalonzo while insisting that he retains the right to lead NEDP.

Those defending Sonko said his political affiliations have not stopped him from standing with ordinary Kenyans or addressing issues affecting them, regardless of the party they support.

The leaders warned that political differences should not descend into personal attacks, saying leadership requires respect, maturity and tolerance.

“The people of Makueni will not be intimidated by arrogance or political theatrics,” one of the leaders said, as supporters rallied behind Sonko and NEDP.

The latest exchange highlights growing political realignments in the region as leaders position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Supporters of Sonko insisted that NEDP is here to stay, declaring their continued backing for both Sonko and Kalonzo.
