Machakos County embraces clean mobility with electric motorcycle services expansion

Machakos County is set to benefit from a significant boost in sustainable transport following the official launch of Roam’s electric motorcycle services in the region.

The new Roam Shop, located at the TotalEnergies Mua View Service Station along Kitui Road, marks a key milestone in expanding clean energy mobility beyond Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to create economic opportunities for the county’s youth while promoting environmentally friendly transport solutions.

Machakos, known for its rugged terrain and hilly landscapes such as Iveti Hills and Kituluni Hill, posed a unique challenge for electric motorcycles.

However, Roam’s deployment of five Roam Air units for hands-on testing with local boda boda riders demonstrated the motorcycles’ robust performance even under heavy loads.

The Roam Air offers riders a cost-effective alternative to traditional fuel-powered motorcycles. With a charging cost of about KES 80 at home and a range of 80–100 km per charge, the electric bikes promise substantial savings compared to petrol expenses, which currently average KES 175 per litre.

Additionally, a new Roam Hub Charging Station in Machakos Town allows riders to rent fully charged batteries at KES 20 per hour, minimizing downtime and enhancing convenience.

Local boda boda operators, represented by Machakos Boda Boda Association Chairman Allan Musembi, have welcomed the expansion, noting the motorcycles’ suitability for the county’s terrain and the financial benefits to riders’ households.

With financing options available through partners like M-Kopa and Watu Credit, Roam’s entry into Machakos County signals a promising step toward greener, more affordable transport solutions that align with the county’s development goals and environmental commitments.
