Nyandarua Senator John Methu has called on President William Ruto’s administration to clearly account for its performance since assuming office in 2022.
Methu said the government should address former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s criticism with factual evidence rather than dismissing him on the basis that he once served in government.
He noted that Gachagua’s recent remarks on accountability had raised concerns about the cost of living, taxation, public debt, healthcare, education, and insecurity.
Methu urged the government to clarify whether Kenyans are in a better position today compared to 2022.
“Why can’t you prepare a comprehensive rebuttal on the four-year performance of Gachagua? Provide evidence,” he said.
The senator also questioned whether the country’s economic growth is being experienced by ordinary citizens.
He asked whether household incomes have increased, whether businesses are performing better, and whether young people are finding employment opportunities.
On healthcare, Methu challenged the government to demonstrate whether the Social Health Authority (SHA) has enhanced access to affordable medical services.
He further raised concerns about the ongoing nurses’ strike and the government’s response to reported cases of abductions and killings.
Methu also demanded answers regarding the January 25 incident at St Peter’s ACK Church in Witima, Othaya, where a service attended by Gachagua was disrupted after tear gas was fired and violence erupted.
“Why haven’t the attackers of Witima Church been arrested?” Methu asked.
He dismissed claims that Gachagua’s previous role in government should invalidate his current criticism.
“Gachagua was inside government but it does not invalidate what he is saying,” Methu said.
Methu also questioned the government’s assertion that increased soda consumption reflects economic growth, arguing that real progress should be evident in people’s incomes.
The remarks come as Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) intensify criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
