Mount Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has distanced himself from allegations linking him to the murder of businessman and parliamentary aspirant Nathan Wasama, accusing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of misleading the public by making the connection.

Nathan Wasama, 61, was shot dead on the night of August 8, 2026, by unknown assailants aboard two motorcycles at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre, Sasur Location, Bungoma County.

DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua later alleged that Kapondi was involved in the killing, an allegation the MP has rejected.

“He should check on his words because it is proof that whatever he has been saying in the national scene is a figment of his own imagination. My conscience is clear. I have never been in the business of killing political opponents. It has never happened in my entire political career, and the late Wasama was never an opponent,” Kapondi said.

The MP also denied claims made by Gachagua that 18 guns were found at his home following a search, and maintained he had never threatened Wasama and had not been summoned by police in connection with the killing.

“If I had threatened him, he would have filed a report with the police. He never did that, and if there was a threat to his life, then I would have been summoned to write a statement. There is nothing like that,” he said.

Kapondi called for thorough investigations into the killing and warned against attempts to politicise the matter, saying it was wrong to use a man’s death to score political points.

Five suspects linked to the murder have been apprehended and are in police custody as investigations continue.
