Muguga residents raise alarm over toxic smoke from industrial waste

Residents of Muguga in Kikuyu Sub-County, Kiambu County, are raising alarm over severe air pollution caused by a fire at a yard where factory by-products have been dumped.

The waste, believed to include by-products from shoe sole and rubber manufacturing, has been burning for three consecutive days, releasing thick smoke and toxic gases that residents say are endangering their health.

According to locals, repeated appeals to the relevant environmental authorities have gone unanswered. They claim that despite efforts by firefighters to contain the blaze, the fire continues to emit what they think is hazardous fumes.

Residents say no government or environmental officials have visited the site to assess the situation. Some families have started relocating to safer areas, fearing respiratory illnesses and other health risks linked to prolonged exposure to the polluted air.

The affected residents are now calling for urgent intervention from the relevant authorities to extinguish the fire, investigate the source of the waste, and safeguard public health.
