Negotiated democracy: Murule elders back Mukhtar Billow Salat for Lafey MP

As the 2027 General Election draws closer, communities across the country are stepping up consultations and endorsing candidates for various elective positions.

Consequently, Murule elders have pledged their support for Lafey MP aspirant Mukhtar Billow Salat ahead of next year’s polls.

The endorsement was made during a meeting involving the Warfay Hirsi sub-clan of the Murule community, where members agreed to rally behind Salat and support his bid for the Lafey parliamentary seat.

Speaking during the meeting, Salat said his vision for Lafey is centred on inclusive development, accountable leadership and improving the lives of ordinary residents.

He identified education, access to water, youth empowerment, support for local traders and livelihood projects as key priorities.

Salat also pledged to strengthen relations with neighbouring communities and lobby for development projects that can unlock the economic and social potential of Lafey Constituency. He urged residents to unite in building a constituency where every community and mwananchi has an opportunity to prosper.

The endorsement adds to the growing community consultations and negotiated political arrangements taking shape in Lafey as local leaders and elders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
