One year after the passing of veteran political leader Raila Odinga, thousands gathered at the historic Migwena Sports Ground in Bondo to commemorate his life, legacy, and enduring impact on Kenyan politics.
The first anniversary celebration was marked by a vibrant sea of orange and traditional attire, as mourners and supporters turned up donning T-shirts printed with Raila’s portrait, wearing his iconic Raila-style caps, and sporting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) branded headgear.
Central to the day’s emotional atmosphere were powerful musical tributes from local and national artists, who drew on iconic anthems long associated with Odinga’s political movement.
Afro-fusion artist Coster Ojwang took to the stage to perform his poignant track Jowi (Luo for “Buffalo”), a traditional lamentation song deeply tied to mourning figures of high esteem.
As Ojwang sang, grief and reverence washed over the crowd, many of whom carried portraits and flags bearing the late leader’s image.
Popular Ohangla maestro Prince Indah thrilled the crowd with an energetic performance of his hit track Girwani, sending the grounds into a frenzy as supporters danced and sang along, celebrating the resilient spirit of the late opposition titan.
The tempo remained high as pioneer musician MajiMaji of the legendary duo Gidi Gidi MajiMaji performed Unbwogable, the iconic 2002 political anthem that became synonymous with the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) revolution and Odinga’s political career.
The performance sparked energetic reactions from the crowd, who waved their ODM caps and joined in chorus to celebrate Odinga’s reputation as an unshakeable figure in democratic struggles.
Injecting a spiritual note into the remembrance, popular gospel singer Milka Omondi delivered a moving rendition of Yesu Tiyo Taling’ Aling’a (“Jesus Works Quietly”). Her performance prompted solemn prayers from church elders and dignitaries present, offering a reflective moment of thanksgiving for Odinga’s family and supporters.
Political leaders and community elders praised the late statesman for his role in shaping modern Kenya, highlighting his contributions to constitutional reform, democracy, and national unity.
The Migwena gathering underscored Odinga’s lingering cultural and political footprint across the country, as supporters vowed to preserve his legacy through unity and continued advocacy for social justice.
