Oburu to officially petition State to declare Saba Saba Day a national holiday

ODM Party’s commitment to the democratic fabric of Kenya remains ironclad, this is according to Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.

It is for this reason, Oburu says, that he will officially petition the state to gazette the historic Saba Saba Day as a national day.

In this way, Oburu insists, Saba Saba as a national day will continously and properly honour the constitutional and civil struggles and achievements of the Kenyan people.

“Our commitment to the democratic fabric of Kenya remains ironclad. It is for this exact reason that as the Party Leader I plan to officially petition the state to gazette the historic Saba Saba Day as a National day to continuously honor the constitutional and civil struggles and achievements of the Kenyan people,” Oburu says in a statement on Saturday, July 11.

Furthermore, Dr Oburu says the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party remains a vigilant watchdog against true tyranny. “We continue to loudly demand institutional accountability”.

Every year, Kenyans have been observing Saba Saba Day, even though it is not a public holiday, to mark a historic 1990 pro-democracy uprising that successfully pushed the KANU Government — under President Daniel Moi — to end one-party rule and restore multi-party democracy.

Presently, Saba Saba has metarmophed into a broader movement where a new generation of activists are advocating for accountability, economic justice, good governance and human rights.
