The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on Kenyans at home and abroad to light candles on Friday, October 2, at 6pm in memory of its late leader, Raila Odinga.

The candle-lighting will kick off a month-long programme dubbed “Mwezi wa Baba”, marking one year since Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India.

“On Friday, 2nd October at exactly 6:00 PM, wherever you are, in Kenya and across the globe, light one candle for Baba,” ODM said in a notice.

The party has urged Kenyans to gather with family and friends, pause and remember Raila’s life and political journey.

The nationwide candle-lighting will be followed by a series of memorial activities across the country. ODM will hold a major rally in Kakamega on October 9, before family-led activities from October 10 to 15 culminate in a memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 15.

Other activities are planned in Garissa, the Coast region, Kajiado and Turkana, before the programme ends with a major memorial rally in Nairobi on October 31.

In Nairobi, a separate candle-lighting gathering has also been announced at Uhuru Park, running from 3pm to midnight on October 2.

Raila died aged 80 after a political career spanning several decades.

He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and contested the presidency five times.
