A suspected outbreak of anthrax has been reported in Ebusunzo village, Ebukola sub-location in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County, leaving one person dead after exposure to an infected cow.
According to County Director of Veterinary Services, Darlington Kadenge, the animal had been prepared for slaughter during a local function and showed no visible signs of illness before its sudden death.
“The cow did not exhibit any symptoms prior to dying, which made it difficult for residents to suspect any danger,” he said.
The animal reportedly collapsed and died unexpectedly, after which it was slaughtered and the meat distributed among members of the public.
“Unfortunately, the meat was consumed by residents who were unaware of the potential health risks,” Kadenge added.
Health officials believe the victim may have contracted anthrax through handling or consuming the contaminated meat.
Authorities have since moved swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further spread of the disease.
As part of the emergency response, the County livestock department has ordered the immediate closure of cattle markets in Luanda and Emuhaya.
“We have suspended all livestock trading in the affected areas as a precautionary measure,” Kadenge confirmed. “Additionally, all cattle must now be vaccinated before being allowed into any market.”
Residents have been urged to avoid consuming meat from animals that die suddenly and to report such incidents to veterinary officers.
Public health teams are also conducting awareness campaigns and monitoring individuals who may have been exposed.
Anthrax is a serious bacterial disease that affects both animals and humans, often transmitted through contact with infected animals or their products. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as containment efforts intensify.
