More than 200 Kipsigis clans are preparing to file a landmark legal case seeking the return of land currently occupied by multinational companies, while also demanding compensation for what they describe as historical land injustices by white settlers.
Speaking in Kericho, advocate Kipkoech Ngetich, who is leading a team of 20 lawyers, said the legal action aims to secure justice for the Kipsigis community, arguing that continued loss of ancestral land has contributed to economic hardship among residents.
The legal team wants ownership of the disputed land restored to the community, saying local residents should have the authority to determine how the land is managed, including whether it should be leased.
They also pointed to counties such as Narok and Kajiado, where communities benefit economically from resources on their ancestral land, saying the Kipsigis deserve similar opportunities through a fair resolution of their historical land claims.
