Police in Homa Bay have arrested at least 40 suspects who took part in demonstrations and looting of several business premises during the arrest of Abdi Kassim Sebo.
The suspects were apprehended during police operations conducted between Friday last week and Monday this week.
The protests erupted on Thursday night following Sebo’s arrest at Homa Bay Bus Stop, where he was apprehended alongside seven other youths accused of attempting to obstruct police officers from arresting him.
The demonstrations continued into Friday morning, disrupting business operations across Homa Bay Town. Traders at the municipal market and other business premises in the central business district were forced to close as protesters drove them away.
The unrest also saw protesters light bonfires on roads and allegedly vandalise streetlights, causing significant losses to local businesses.
Homa Bay County Commissioner Ronald Mwiawi has vowed to sustain the crackdown, saying security operations will continue in the coming days until criminal gangs are eliminated.
