Reprieve for Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo as High Court declares his impeachment null and void

It is a reprieve for Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo after the High Court in Meru declared his impeachment as null and void.

16 out of 18 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted on Thursday, June 26 to impeach Governor Guyo, despite the existence of conservatory orders issued by the Isiolo High Court on June 23.

In a ruling issued virtually by Justice Heston Mbogo on Friday, June 27, the court affirmed that the conservatory order issued by the Isiolo court was still in force, and that the County Assembly acted in contempt.

“THAT the orders of this court issued on 25th June, 2025…are in force. THAT Any act done by the respondents or any other body/person in contravention of those orders shall be null and void. The said orders shall remain in force until set aside or reviewed by this court or the Court of Appeal,” Justice Mbogo directed.

Consequently, the judge also ordered Isiolo County Speaker and MCA Abubakar Abdi Godana, having been cited for contempt of court, to appear before the court in person, and/or with counsel of their choice to respond to the alleged contempt of the orders of the court on Monday, June 30 at 9 am.

The lawyers representing the County Assembly of Isiolo and the Speaker sought to make an application for recusal of the judge and stay of proceedings.

However, the judge directed that the respondents are at liberty to file a formal application for recusal and stay of proceedings.

However, their petition, Justice Mbogo argued, will be heard only after they have answered the question of their compliance of the court order.

“Recusal does not shield respondents from obeying court orders,” he noted.

While dismissing Governor Guyo’s impeachment on Thursday, Isiolo County Clerk Salad Boru Guracha, said the reports were not only misleading but were also part of the ongoing “politically motivated misinformation”, intended to mislead the public and undermine lawful Assembly procedures.

While citing the active court case, the clerk insisted the County Assembly had been explicitly prohibited from advancing the impeachment proceedings against the Governor at this time.

“The Assembly is fully bound by these orders and remains committed to upholding the rule of law and constitutional due processes,” the statement reads in part.
