Several arrested in Makindu as fuel protest tensions grip Makueni towns

Several people have been arrested in Makindu, Makueni County, following demonstrations over rising fuel prices after protesters attempted to block the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

A spot check by TV47 Digital indicates heightened tension in several towns along the highway, including Kibwezi, Kiunduani and Emali. Earlier in the morning, police engaged in running battles with protesters after a group of youth tried to barricade sections of the major transport corridor.

Speaking to the media, Nzaui Sub-County Police Commander Ms Agnes Kunga assured motorists of their safety and smooth movement along the highway, stating that security officers had the situation under control. She also urged demonstrators to seek peaceful and lawful ways of expressing their grievances to the government.

Although protesters have so far failed to completely block the road, many motorists especially truck drivers have opted to suspend movement amid fears of further unrest.
