As tensions build up ahead of the commemorative Saba saba protests scheduled for Monday, June 7, 2025, several schools around the country have announced that they will close their doors, urging learners to stay at home, citing safety concerns.
Several institutions of learning have released notices, urging parents not to release their children, advising instead that classes resume on Tuesday, June 8. Notices cite uncertainty over road access, potential violence, and lack of clarity on security.
“This closure is due to the prevailing uncertainties surrounding the day, particularly with respect to safety concerns. It is purely a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone,” read a notice from Premier Academy.
“Due to the scheduled demonstrations on Monday, June 7, the school will be closed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of our learners. Classes will resume on Tuesday, 8, at 8:00 a.m.,” another from Kipkeino school read.
Other schools that have officially issued notices include Laiser Hill, Eldo Joymax Academy in Eldoret, Consolata school, Thika Road Christian Academy, among others.
This comes after repeated cases of anti-government protests, turned violent, resulting in injuries and even death.
However, the Ministry of Education has not issued an official directive for schools to remain closed on July 7.
The Sabasaba protests were originally held on July 7, 1990, when Kenyans took to the streets to demand approval of a multi-party democracy.
