A tragic incident occurred at Queen Angels Primary School in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, where a school latrine collapsed, trapping several pupils underneath.
Three of the pre-primary school pupils have been retrieved in critical condition.
Speaking at the scene, Turbo Sub-County Commander Patrick Wekesa confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts, assuring that the three were taken to the hospital in critical condition as the latrine-digging process continued.
“We are at the scene digging out to find out whether there are still other children underground,” he said.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, July 10 morning prompted an immediate response from emergency teams and local officials.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established, but concerns are mounting over the structural integrity of sanitation facilities in public schools, especially during the rainy season.
Rescue operations are currently ongoing as authorities continue to search for any remaining children who may still be underground.
