“Uhuru is trying to split opposition so that Ruto can get re-elected” – Prof. Gitile Naituli

Governance and policy analyst Prof. Gitile Naituli has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of working to weaken opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, questioning his political intentions despite publicly backing ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2022.

Speaking during an interview with TV47 on TV47 Prime hosted by Debarl Inea on August 5, Prof. Naituli claimed Uhuru’s actions do not match his past declarations of support.

“Uhuru said he was supporting Raila but never campaigned for him even one day. If he is genuine, why is he assembling people for Kalonzo Musyoka?” Prof. Naituli posed.

He argued that the former president’s current political engagements could fracture the opposition coalition, adding, “Uhuru is trying to split the united alternative government so that Ruto can get re-elected.”

Prof. Naituli also challenged the perception of Uhuru’s influence in the Mt. Kenya region, saying, “Uhuru has never really been popular with Central Kenya. In fact, if 2007 never happened, Uhuru would never have been elected by these people.”

On governance, the analyst pointed to corruption as Kenya’s biggest obstacle to development, comparing the country with successful Asian economies.

“Singapore, Korea and the Asian Tigers did not make peace with corruption; that’s why they succeeded. Kenya has made peace with corruption. It will never move,” he said.

During the same interview, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei maintained that Uhuru had never supported President William Ruto’s presidential bid.

“We know the mind and heart of Uhuru Kenyatta. It is in the public domain that Uhuru Kenyatta has never even in his wildest dreams supported President William Ruto to be the President in 2022. He has never been comfortable with the Presidency of William Ruto,” Cherargei stated.

The senator also dismissed the opposition’s Linda Mwananchi movement, describing it as “just an infatuation,” while adding, “We are going to Singapore via Canaan; that is where Raila left us. Even Vision 2060 was Raila’s idea.”
