Wanga rules out working with Gachagua over tribal politics

Homa Bay Governor and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairperson Gladys Wanga has ruled out working with leaders she accuses of promoting ethnic divisions, citing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as an example.

Speaking during the ODM Delegates Convention in Vihiga County on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Wanga said the party would not associate itself with politicians seeking to divide Kenyans along tribal lines.

Wanga maintained that ODM stood for national unity and inclusive leadership, insisting that political partnerships should be built around issues affecting Kenyans rather than ethnic identities.

Her remarks appeared to draw a line between the party and leaders she believes are advancing divisive political rhetoric, amid growing realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The ODM chairperson’s statement comes as political parties and leaders intensify efforts to consolidate support and position themselves for the next electoral contest.

Wanga’s remarks are likely to reignite debate over the role of ethnic politics in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly as leaders seek to build alliances across different regions.

The ODM delegates convention in Vihiga County provided a platform for party leaders to articulate their political positions and outline the values they intend to advance as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
