“We will conduct special rituals while naked” – Abagusii Council of Elders warn Keumbu attackers

The Abagusii Council of Elders has warned of serious consequences for those responsible for the attack on the Linda Mwananchi convoy at Keumbu in Kisii County.

Speaking after a meeting attended by elders from both Kisii and Nyamira counties, Council Chairperson James Matundura called on anyone involved in planning or carrying out the attack to come forward and apologise. He said the incident has deeply angered the Abagusii community and that the council is prepared to pursue all available avenues to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Among the traditional measures under consideration is a special prayer ritual to be led by elderly members of the community aged between 90 and 100 years.

“We have already started identifying elders aged between 90 and 100 years to conduct the prayers,” said Matundura.

He added that, in keeping with tradition, the elders conducting the prayers would do so naked.

“Wanafanya maombi bila nguo,” Matundura said.

According to the council, the death of one person during the violence represents a grave violation of the values and traditions of the Abagusii community.

“We cannot celebrate when someone has lost their life,” he said.

The elders also expressed concern over the alleged involvement of women in the violence.

“We have never witnessed a situation where women carry weapons such as stones and batons to attack people, yet that is what we saw in Keumbu,” Matundura said.

The council further called on political leaders from the region, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, to publicly state their positions on the incident. The elders also urged the County Commissioner to intervene and communicate the government’s position.

Matundura said the council is committed to pursuing justice through all lawful and traditional mechanisms available, stressing that the elders will continue holding consultative meetings until a lasting and acceptable resolution is found.
