Who is Danish Onyango, Governor Wanga’s nominee to replace Magwanga?

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Onyango to the position of the Deputy Governor, a seat that was recently left vacant after the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga.

In an executive order dated March 16, 2026, Governor Wanga made the nomination of her deputy, as well as several other changes in the constitution of the county’s Executive Committee.

While announcing his resignation, Magwanga cited frustrations that he said made it difficult for him to effectively discharge his duties. He also claimed that his office was locked in December last year, preventing him from accessing it. He also said that his official vehicle was taken away and another vehicle assigned to him was not fuelled.

But who is the man poised to replace Magwanga, subject to approval by the Homa Bay County Assembly?

Onyango joined the public service in 2003 and has a stellar record of excellent performance and integrity in high echelons of public service up to Undersecretary in the State Department of Infrastructure.

The man who hails from Kabondo Kasipul Constituency holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics Political Science and Public Administration) degree from University of Nairobi https://www.uonbi.ac.ke/and Master of Arts in Development Studies.

“I am confident he will ably serve the County in this new DG role based on his exemplary performance since 2022,” Governor Wanga said of her deputy governor nominee.

Prior to his nomination, Onyango was serving as the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Roads and Public Works, a position Wanga says he will continue serving.

Wanga attributes the expansion of road network and connectivity in all the 40 wards of Homa Bay County to Onyango’s result-based performance and leadership.

“We have opened ground breaking roads where none existed,” Wanga notes in the Executive Order. “In the Financial Year 2024/25, we opened 736 kilometers of new roads while 538 kilometers of existing roads received routine maintenance. 116 kilometers of targeted access roads were rehabilitated to connect schools. health facilities, markets and beaches.”

Wanga also says that Onyango has led landmark transformative projects, raising considerable resources for instance the KSh1.4 billion KISIP II Projects in the informal settlements.

Described as a resourceful team player and team leader, Onyango is said to have led a partnered with the National Government in Homa Bay Town Upgrading of Roads and Expansion of Kabunde Airstrip.

Onyango also led Technical and Steering Committees for the Hosting of the 2nd Homa Bay International Investment Conference in 2024, Madaraka Day and the 9th Devolution Conference in 2025.

“Given his wide experience, I am confident he will handle the functions of the Office of the Deputy Governor.”
