East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has officially announced her entry into national elective politics, declaring she will contest the Nairobi Senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County during the one-year memorial service of her late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Winnie urged young people across the country to step up and claim political leadership roles ahead of the upcoming election.
Addressing thousands of supporters and dignitaries gathered to honor the iconic opposition leader, Winnie challenged the youth to take active ownership of the country’s governance rather than remaining on the political sidelines.
”Let it not be a rumor that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is some space in Nairobi, and that is why I have decided I will vie for Senator of Nairobi County,” she told an cheering crowd.
Winnie emphasized that young Kenyans hold the key to political transformation and called on them to vie for electoral seats across all levels in 2027 to continue the reform legacy championed by her late father.
The announcement signals a major political shift in the capital and within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party navigates its future following Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025.
Her move positions her as a key player in Nairobi’s high-stakes political contest, setting the stage for political realignments as current officeholders eye higher seats.
