World’s largest condom maker to raise prices amid supply chain strain caused by Iran war

Karex Bhd, the world’s largest condom producer, has announced plans to increase prices by between 20% and 30%, citing ongoing supply chain disruptions linked to the Iran war.

Chief Executive Goh Miah Kiat said the company may push prices even higher if the situation persists, noting that rising costs across the supply chain have left the firm with little choice but to pass the burden onto customers.

“The situation is definitely very fragile, prices are expensive… We have no choice but to transfer the costs right now to the customers,” he told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Karex, which produces more than 5 billion condoms annually, supplies major global brands such as Durex and Trojan, as well as public health institutions including National Health Service and programmes run by the United Nations.

The company is also experiencing a surge in demand, as higher freight costs and shipping delays leave many distributors with depleted stock levels.

Karex joins a growing list of manufacturers, including medical glove producers, warning of worsening supply chain bottlenecks as the conflict disrupts energy supplies and petrochemical flows from the Middle East—key inputs in the production of synthetic rubber, nitrile, and other materials used in condom manufacturing.

Since the conflict began in late February, the company has recorded sharp increases in the cost of raw materials and components, including packaging and lubricants such as aluminium foils and silicone oil, further squeezing margins and driving the planned price hikes.
