The ongoing upgrade of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is not only transforming one of Kenya’s iconic sporting facilities into a world-class venue but is also creating jobs, equipping young professionals with practical skills, and positioning the North Rift as a key hub for international sports.
The project documents indicate that it is currently 47 percent complete, with 221 workers engaged on site. Once complete, to required standards, it will serve as one of the official training venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
In a move aimed at delivering world-class sports infrastructure, President William Ruto tasked the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with modernizing the facility, leveraging the military’s reputation for discipline, speed, and precision.
Speaking on the significance of the investment, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo said modern sports infrastructure is critical to unlocking the country’s sporting and economic potential.
“Sport is an economy. Infrastructure is its foundation. Every modern stadium creates opportunities for talent to thrive, jobs to grow and communities to earn from talent.” he said. “High-tech facilities that will transform talent into livelihoods and position sport as a driver of economic growth in Kenya,” he added.
Assistant Civil Engineer Shadrack Ebu, who has worked on the project for seven months, said the construction has been a valuable learning experience that has strengthened his professional skills while improving his livelihood.
“In my career, this project has helped me improve my understanding of construction standards, especially in analysing drawings and ensuring quality control. Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new,” he said.
Ebu expressed confidence that the project will be delivered on schedule, citing the rigorous quality assurance measures being implemented throughout the construction process.
“If you look at the quality control and quality analysis being undertaken here, it shows that the work is being done to the required standards. I believe the project will be completed on time,” he added.
Further, he said the project has broadened his social networks and enhanced his financial independence. “It has enabled me to interact with many professionals, and financially I am now able to depend on myself because I have a steady source of income,” he noted.
The project engineers state the stadium’s ongoing upgrade will expand its seating capacity from 9,248 to 15,671 through new concrete grandstands and an expanded VIP section. To comply with CAF standards, the renovation includes a full spectator canopy, a modern tartan athletics track, and an upgraded international-standard football pitch.
According to Ebu, the improved facility will provide young athletes with a better environment to develop their talents and compete at the highest level.
Operations at the site have maintained continuous momentum under the new management system, with workers reporting zero downtime and steady funding since work resumed in March.
Speaking on the ongoing developments, Nancy Chebet noted a stark contrast to previous operations, assuring that current progress remains on a solid, high-quality track. Beyond sports, the project is expected to stimulate the local economy through employment, increased business opportunities and tourism associated with international sporting events.
Once completed, Kipchoge Keino Stadium will stand as a lasting public asset, strengthening Eldoret’s reputation as Kenya’s athletics capital while creating opportunities for athletes, youth, businesses and the wider community long after the 2027 AFCON tournament.
