Detectives have detained at least 29 students from Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil as investigations into the deadly dormitory fire intensify.
The police believe the fire, which broke out on Thursday, May 28, at 12:45 am could be an arson attack that swept through the upper section of one of the dormitories, leaving several students trapped inside.
According to investigators, at least 79 other students sustained injuries from the incident, rushed to various hospitals, and 71 were later released in stable condition.
The students reportedly spent Thursday night under police watch inside one of the school blocks as questioning continued.
Other learners who had earlier left with their parents or guardians have also been recalled to assist with the ongoing investigations.
Additionally, investigators are looking into allegations that the burnt dormitory may have been locked from outside, preventing the students from escaping when the fire started.
The recovered bodies have been transferred to the Naivasha General Hospital, whereby a Government-supported DNA identification exercise will be conducted in order to assist the families in positively identifying their loved ones.
