Be thankful of your struggles – Wetangula’s message as he turns 67

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has penned a warm message as he marks his 67th birthday.

Wetangula’s birthday coincided with President William Ruto’s one year anniversary as the head of state.

“Be thankful for all the struggles you go through. They make you stronger, wiser and humble. Don’t let it break you, let it make you.

“Thank you for all the heartfelt birthday wishes!” he added.

Rise in Politics

Wetangula, who is a lawyer by profession, joined politics in 1993 through a nomination as a Member of Parliament by the late President Daniel Moi.

He went for an elective seat in 1997 where he lost but was appointed as chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Board.

Wetangula rejoined government as Sirisia MP in 2002. He was elected under a FORD-Kenya ticket.

The lawmaker was subsequently appointed as an assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs.

After the 2007/8 post election violence, Wetangula rose to the rank of minister of Foreign Affairs. A cabinet reshuffle in 2012 however saw him redeployed to the Trade docket.

Wetangula ditches Raila, joins Ruto

The 2013 general elections came about in the wake of a new Constitution that was promulgated in August 2010. The former MP became the first Bungoma senator under the newly birthed devolved units.

All this while, the former senator was a close ally of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, who was the then leader of Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD).

After serving two terms in the Senate, Wetangula defected to President William Ruto’s camp in the run-up to the hotly contested 2022 general elections.

He was voted in as the Speaker of National Assembly. He marked one year in office on September 8, 2023.
