Burudi Nabwera: Former minister and Kenya’s first U.S ambassador dies at 99

Veteran Kenyan diplomat and former Cabinet Minister Burudi Nabwera has died aged 99, leaving behind a legacy spanning decades of public service, diplomacy and national politics.

Nabwera was among the pioneers who helped establish Kenya’s diplomatic presence following independence, serving as the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations from December 1963 to September 1970.

He also became Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States during the early years of the Republic.

After his diplomatic service, Nabwera returned to national politics, where he held several influential positions in government and the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU).

During the administration of former President Daniel arap Moi, he served as Minister of State in the Office of the President and as KANU Secretary-General, placing him at the centre of the country’s political affairs at the time.

Nabwera also made history in elective politics in 1988 when he became the first Member of Parliament (MP) for Lugari Constituency, following its creation.

His tenure in Parliament further cemented his place in Kenya’s political history.

News of his death has prompted tributes from leaders who have recognised his contribution to the country’s diplomatic relations, governance and development.

Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya expressed sorrow over Nabwera’s passing, describing him as a distinguished leader and diplomat who served Kenya with dedication and honour.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Mzee Burudi Nabwera, a distinguished leader and diplomat who served our nation with dedication and honour,” he said.

Oparanya noted that Nabwera’s contribution to diplomacy, governance and national development would remain part of the country’s history.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also mourned the veteran statesman, saying Kenya had lost a respected public servant whose life was defined by patriotism and service to the nation.

“Kenya has lost a distinguished statesman whose life was defined by service, patriotism and an enduring commitment to our nation,” he said.

Mudavadi highlighted Nabwera’s role in laying the foundations of Kenya’s international relations during the early years of independence, describing him as one of the leaders who helped establish the country’s voice on the global stage.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Burudi Nabwera, a respected diplomat, former Cabinet Minister and one of the pioneers who helped establish Kenya’s voice on the international stage in the early years of our Republic. He belonged to a generation of leaders who helped lay the foundations of our nation’s diplomacy and development,” Mudavadi stated.

He extended his condolences to Nabwera’s family, friends and all Kenyans mourning his death, adding that the veteran diplomat’s contribution would continue to inspire future generations.
