Busia border security team seizes suspected narcotics, arrests bus driver

A multi-agency security team has intercepted suspected narcotics at the Busia One-Stop Border Post and arrested a bus driver during an operation targeting cross-border crime.

According to the National Police Service, officers stopped a Nairobi-bound passenger bus on August 5, 2026, and recovered 164 suspected narcotic pellets hidden in one of the luggage compartments after carrying out a thorough search.

The bus driver was arrested and is being held in police custody pending arraignment. However, another suspect who was on board the bus escaped, prompting police to launch a manhunt.

The suspected narcotics and the bus have been detained at Busia Police Station as exhibits as forensic analysis and investigations continue.

NPS said it remains committed to dismantling cross-border drug trafficking networks and thanked its multi-agency partners and members of the public for sharing information that supports the fight against crime.
