A multi-agency security team has recovered an illegal firearm and five rounds of ammunition in Isiolo County as authorities intensify the ongoing Dumisha Amani security operation.
The National Police Service (NPS) said the weapons were recovered on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in the Kakili area of Burat Location following an intelligence-led operation.
According to the NPS, the firearm was allegedly in the possession of a suspected bandit linked to recent armed attacks and livestock rustling in the region.
The recovered weapon has since been secured in police custody as investigations continue.
“The ongoing Dumisha Amani security operation continues to yield positive results,” the NPS said in a statement posted on its X account.
The recovery comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to address banditry and the illegal possession of firearms in parts of northern Kenya.
The NPS said the cooperation between security agencies and local residents remains important in helping authorities identify and recover illegal weapons.
“The National Police Service commends the continued collaboration between the security teams and the local community,” the service stated.
It further emphasised the importance of information provided by residents in supporting security operations and disrupting criminal activities.
“Information shared by the public remains vital,” the NPS said.
The service also reaffirmed its commitment to removing illegal firearms from the region and tackling insecurity linked to banditry.
“We reaffirm our firm and unwavering resolve to rid the region of illegal arms, crush banditry, and ensure safety and security for all,” the NPS stated.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or individuals believed to be in possession of illicit weapons.
The latest recovery is expected to inform further investigations into the suspected bandit network and the recent attacks and livestock-rustling incidents to which the firearm was allegedly linked.
The NPS said members of the public can provide information anonymously through the established police reporting channels as security agencies continue with operations aimed at restoring peace and safety in the region.
