The ongoing construction of the Sh27 million Ikulya Earth Dam in Waita Ward, Mwingi Central, is expected to ease water shortages and boost irrigated agriculture in the area.
The project will help residents who currently trek between 7 and 10 kilometres in search of water for domestic use and livestock.
Kitui County Agriculture CECM Mbaya Kimwele says the dam is expected to provide water for up to six months without drying, benefiting about 3,000 households.
The project is also expected to support irrigation and encourage residents to embrace climate-smart agriculture through various agricultural value chains.
Residents say the availability of water will enable them to expand farming, improve food production and reduce the long distances they travel in search of water.
