Ndindi Nyoro, Matiang’i, Karua vow to unite opposition ahead of 2027 elections

Opposition leaders led by People’s Party of Kenya party leader Ndindi Nyoro, Jubilee party leader Fred Matiang’i and PLP party leader Martha Karua have vowed to unite behind the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying a united opposition is key to unseating President William Ruto.

Addressing a public rally in Njoro town, Nakuru County, the leaders said Kenyans deserve a government that prioritises their needs over personal interests.

They maintained that their goal is to rally behind a single presidential candidate capable of defeating Ruto without a run-off.

PLP party leader Martha Karua cautioned opposition leaders against blocking other leaders from joining the opposition, insisting that the opposition must remain open to all leaders committed to bringing political change.

Karua urged opposition politicians to stop exchanging harsh words and instead focus on building a formidable political movement ahead of the 2027 polls.

She said internal divisions and personal attacks would only weaken their collective efforts to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The opposition leaders have also accused President William Ruto of using proxies to acquire shares in the Kenya Pipeline Company for personal benefit.

They claimed that the country’s public wealth should not be used to enrich individuals at the expense of Kenyans, demanding accountability in the management of strategic national assets.

The leaders insisted that public resources must be protected and used to improve the lives of citizens rather than serve the interests of a few individuals.

Turning to the economy, the leaders accused the Ruto administration of presiding over deteriorating economic conditions, arguing that ordinary Kenyans continue to struggle with the high cost of living.

They claimed that the country’s economic growth has failed to translate into meaningful relief for households and businesses, accusing the president of presenting a misleading picture of the economy.

The leaders have dismissed President Ruto’s promises to lower Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax for low-income earners and increase the Hustler Fund borrowing limit, describing the pledges made during Tuesday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations as a political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.

They accused the president of failing to fulfil his commitments to Kenyans since taking office, arguing that the latest announcements were insufficient to address the challenges facing ordinary citizens.

They argued that the 2027 election would provide Kenyans with an opportunity to demand better leadership and reject leaders who put personal interests ahead of national development.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to promoting democracy, accountability and what they termed the positive change the country deserves.
