NHIF, NYS, Anglo-Leasing and other high-profile cases this week

Several high-profile cases are coming up in Kenyan courts this week, starting Monday, September 4 through Friday, September 8.

Richard Kerich, former NHIF CEO

Wednesday, September 6 will see former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Richard Kerich and Meridian Centre Ltd directors return to the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kerich and the said directors are charged with abuse of office and irregular procurement.

Apparently, the NHIF paid Meridian Centre Ltd KSh117 million for services not rendered. The company was supposed to oversee the provision of outpatient medical cover under the civil servants’ medical scheme.

Amos Kibue Mwangi

On Thursday, September 7, Amos Kabue Mwangi returns to court. He has been charged with unlawful acquisition of public property and fraudulently making payments from public revenue.

The allegations relate to the irregular payments of KSh201 million by Kenya School of Law to various companies belonging to Mwangi for no services rendered or goods supplied.

NYS Saga: Peter Mangiti, former Devolution PS

Peter Mangiti, the former Principal Secretary, Ministry of Devolution and 22 others are returning to court on Friday, September 8.

They are charged with conspiracy to commit an economic crime. The allegations relate to the procurement irregularities in the award of contract to Blue Star Enterprises Ltd by the National Youth Service (NYS) for the supply and delivery of training materials at a cost of KSh47.6 million.

Anglo Leasing

Deepak Chamanlal Kamani and seven others – who have been charged with engaging in a project without prior planning – will also be appearing in court on Wednesday, September 6.

The allegations relate to the Euros 40 million Suppliers Financing Agreement that the office of the president entered with Sound Day Corporation of United Kingdom for the modernisation of police equipment and accessories.
