A Nigerian court will on Wednesday, September 6 make a ruling that will dictate the country’s political fate.
The appeals court will be pronouncing itself on the petition before it, seeking to overturn President Bola Tinubu’s election victory.
The country is waiting with bated breath as the five-judge bench finally releases their ruling after months of deliberations.
When filing the petition, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party claimed massive election malpractices including fraud.
In a hotly contested polls in February 25 2023, Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared winner, getting only 37% of the total votes.
PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Labour’s Peter Obi secured 29% and 25% of the votes respectively.
Tinubu henceforth became Nigeria’s first president to take office with less than 50% of the votes.
Depending on the decision made on Wednesday, it appears that this will not be the final legal stage of the contested elections. Parties can appeal to the Supreme Court for a final verdict.
No court has overturned a presidential vote in Nigeria since its return to democracy from military rule in 1999.
