Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has officially recorded a statement at the Parliament Police Station in Nairobi following the attack against him earlier this month in Kisumu.
The senator appeared at the station accompanied by members of the Linda Mwananchi team, who said they had formally presented their account of the incident to investigators. The group is now urging authorities to move quickly and arrest those they believe were behind the assault.
Members of the team claimed they have strong evidence linking a senior government official to the incident. They warned that if law enforcement agencies fail to take action, they may consider pursuing private prosecution against those they believe masterminded the attack.
Speaking after Osotsi completed recording his statement, Siaya Governor James Orengo criticised the pace of investigations, accusing police of failing to question or detain individuals allegedly connected to the attack.
“They are still out there, and they have not been summoned to record statements. The ring leader, who was actually seen in the property before that brutal attack, has not been summoned,” said Orengo.
He added that continued delays in the investigation could embolden perpetrators of political violence.
“If the police do not arrest and prosecute the masterminds of this brutal attack, we will institute private prosecution against the masterminds because if we leave it that way, then the situation in Kenya will continue,” he added.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna also weighed in on the matter, warning that failure by authorities to act on available evidence would undermine the rule of law.
“If the weight of evidence cannot force the police to act on the masterminds, then there is no law and order in this country,” Sifuna stated.
Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo echoed similar concerns, urging the government to take decisive steps against what leaders described as increasing cases of politically motivated attacks.
“Stop shielding hooliganism. We don’t want Kenya to go the Haiti way,” Barongo said.
Osotsi was assaulted on the morning of April 8 at a Java House outlet located at Western Mall in Kisumu.
The Linda Mwananchi team has also announced plans to hold a public rally in Kisumu on April 26, where they intend to mobilize supporters and push for accountability over the incident.
