Police have arrested a suspected illicit chang’aa dealer and recovered 400 litres of the illegal brew during an intelligence-led operation in Shaviringa, Vihiga County.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was conducted by officers from Cheptulu Police Station in Tiriki East Sub-County, who had been pursuing the suspect over alleged involvement in the illicit alcohol trade.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the NPS said the raid led to the successful arrest of the suspect, who had reportedly been evading law enforcement.
“In a meticulous intelligence-led operation, officers from Cheptulu Police Station in Tiriki East Sub-County successfully arrested a notorious illicit-brew dealer who had been on the run,” the statement read.
Police said a total of 400 litres of chang’aa were recovered during the operation and secured as exhibits to support the ongoing case.
“During the raid, 400 litres of chang’aa were seized at the scene. The suspect was placed in custody, awaiting processing and arraignment in court,” the NPS added.
The arrest forms part of the National Police Service’s continued crackdown on the production, distribution and sale of illicit alcohol, which authorities say poses serious health and security risks to communities.
The service also commended residents for providing information that contributed to the successful operation, noting that public cooperation remains essential in the fight against crime.
“The National Police Service commends the public for their collaboration. This partnership remains vital in eliminating illegal drugs and illicit alcohol within our communities,” the statement said.
The NPS further urged members of the public to continue reporting criminal and suspicious activities through its toll-free emergency numbers and anonymous reporting channels as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle illegal alcohol networks across the country.
