Jorge died on Friday in Rosario, the city where the Messi family has its roots, according to reports from Argentina.

The 68-year-old had remained an important figure in Lionel Messi’s life throughout the footballer’s rise from a talented youngster in Rosario to a global sporting icon.

Jorge was not only Messi’s father but also served as his representative for many years, helping oversee the financial and professional side of his son’s career.

The pair’s journey together began in Argentina before Lionel’s move to Spain as a teenager. Messi joined Barcelona’s youth academy at 13, beginning a football journey that would eventually see him become one of the most decorated players in the game.
