Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has urged political leaders to set aside political differences and focus on issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.

Matiang’i spoke in Kajiado County on Saturday while attending the parental blessings ceremony of Baba Canon Ernest Ole Maturi, where he was joined by Jubilee Party’s Kajiado gubernatorial candidate Tarayia Ole Kores, Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Manje and Bobasi MP Innocent Obiri.

His remarks come amid disagreements within the United Opposition as political parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i called on leaders across the political divide to move away from personal differences and political confrontations, saying their priority should be addressing the challenges facing Kenyans.

He cited the high cost of living, unemployment, poverty, insecurity and limited economic opportunities among the issues requiring greater attention from political leaders.

“Instead of quarrelling, let us focus on the challenges facing our people, including insecurity in Kajiado and problems in the education sector,” Matiang’i said.

He urged leaders, whether in government or the opposition, to put the interests of citizens ahead of political wrangling and personal attacks.

Matiang’i also used the occasion to appeal to the Maa community to support his presidential bid, pointing to his experience in public service as evidence of his ability to lead the country.

The former Cabinet secretary has been positioning himself for the 2027 presidential race as opposition parties continue efforts to build a united political front to challenge President William Ruto.

He said Kenya needs leaders capable of confronting the country’s economic and social challenges and delivering practical solutions to citizens.

The former Interior CS’s appeal comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with prospective presidential candidates seeking to consolidate support across different regions and communities.
