Police have disrupted a suspected highway robbery operation along the Dagahaley–Mathangisi Road in Garissa County following a tip-off from members of the public.
The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement posted on its X account on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, said officers moved to the area after receiving information about suspected criminals targeting motorists along the route.
The operation was conducted with the support of National Police Reservists (NPRs), who joined the officers in tracking down the suspected robbers.
According to the NPS, the suspects had allegedly been intercepting motorists and robbing them at gunpoint.
“Acting on this intelligence, the team, supported by National Police Reservists (NPRs), proceeded to the area and mounted an operation to track down the suspected robbers,” the police service said.
The operation resulted in the recovery of a homemade firearm, which police believe was linked to the suspected robbery activities.
The NPS said the intervention also helped prevent further attacks on motorists using the busy route.
“The coordinated operation brought the suspected robbery to an abrupt halt, resulting in the recovery of a homemade firearm and the prevention of further attacks along the route,” the statement added.
However, the suspects managed to evade arrest, with police saying efforts to locate and apprehend them are still underway.
“The search for the suspects remains ongoing, with officers pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible,” the NPS said.
Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.

The recovery comes as security agencies continue efforts to curb armed robberies and other criminal activities along roads in parts of Garissa County.
