Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has clarified that Kenya is not implementing a blanket ban on foreign nationals engaging in small-scale businesses.

Mudavadi said the government’s position is to ensure that the participation of foreign nationals in Kenya’s economy complies with the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Protocol and applicable national laws.

“You must regularize your immigration status and the Government will protect you and your business. This is the practice across the world. We are also encouraging Kenyans that are travelling to work and do business in foreign nations to also regularize their status wherever they are. Follow the law and be disciplined.” Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi’s sentiments were echoed by Tharaka Nithi County Governor Muthomi Njuki who said Kenya remains to be a friendly country to all foreigners as long as they abide by the law of the land and have the right documentation to do business or any other legal engagement.

“Kenya cannot be a xenophobic country. What we are asking is to know who are these doing business in Kenya, and be with the right documents. Ensure you have the right permit and other legal documents so that we can know where you are and if you have regularized your stay and business.”

The leaders were speaking in Kathwana, Tharaka Nithi County during the opening of the County Headquarters complex.
