Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has taken aim at President William Ruto’s administration, questioning its four-year record shortly after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua delivered his “Ruto at 4” address.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Salasya argued that Gachagua’s remarks should be viewed beyond the political rivalry between the government and opposition.

He urged Kenyans to focus on the substance of Gachagua’s criticism, particularly the rising cost of living, taxation, public debt and what he described as unfulfilled government promises.

“Set the campaign spin aside for a moment and listen to what Rigathi Gachagua was actually saying in his ‘Ruto at 4’ address,” Salasya wrote.

The MP said Gachagua was not simply attacking the Kenya Kwanza administration but was challenging its record since taking power in 2022.

“He was not merely trading insults with the government; he was putting its four-year record on trial,” Salasya said, pointing to “the rising debt, the heavier tax burden, the promises that have quietly been abandoned and a governing style that treats criticism as disloyalty.”

Salasya argued that the central political debate ahead of the 2027 General Election should be whether the government has delivered the improvements it promised Kenyans.

“The political question facing the country” is whether life has improved for citizens who were promised “a cheaper, fairer and more accountable Kenya,” he said.

According to the legislator, many households and businesses are struggling with increased financial pressure, while young people continue to face limited economic opportunities.

“Four years later, many Kenyans are counting higher deductions, more expensive essentials, fewer opportunities,” he stated.

Salasya further called for the 2027 election to be treated as an assessment of the government’s performance rather than a contest based solely on political messaging.

“The next election should therefore not be treated as a referendum on speeches or political branding. It should be a judgement on performance,” he said.

He posed several questions that he believes voters should consider: “What did this administration promise? What did it deliver? Who paid the price for its failures, and who benefited from its decisions?”

Salasya concluded that the government must account for its record as Kenyans prepare to make their next political decision.

“The country needs more than polished messaging and explanations after the fact. It needs leadership that can account for its record and a political alternative prepared to do better,” he said.
