A heavy storm on Monday evening caused extensive damage at Majiwa Senior School in Bondo, Siaya County, blowing off the roof of the science laboratory and a dormitory that accommodates hundreds of students.
The storm struck at around 6:30 p.m., hurling the newly renovated laboratory roof nearly 30 metres away and uprooting nearby trees, leaving the science laboratory in ruins.

The laboratory, which had recently undergone renovations worth more than one million shillings, was left in ruins.
The dormitory also suffered severe destruction, with students’ personal belongings—including blankets, books, and mattresses damaged beyond use.
Principal Amsala Morris said the school faces repair costs estimated at over five million shillings, including roofing, wiring, and painting.
“The school may not reopen for Term Two as scheduled unless the buildings are repaired. Students currently have nowhere to sleep and no place to conduct science practicals,” she said.

Board of Management chairman Dr. Kennedy Oreyo appealed for urgent support from government agencies, the Constituency Development Fund, and NGOs.
“We want to ensure our students continue learning despite this calamity,” he said.
Area Chief Hosbone Omollo, who visited the school after the incident, described the destruction as “very unfortunate” and called on well-wishers and good Samaritans to assist.

He estimated the damage at more than 1.5 million shillings and emphasised the need for immediate intervention to restore facilities and replace students’ lost property.
Majiwa Senior School now risks delaying the reopening of its second term, leaving learners without essential accommodation and science learning facilities.
