Mombasa youth are taking a more active role in the fight against non-communicable diseases, embracing physical activity and preventive healthcare as key steps toward a healthier future.
This was highlighted during a walkathon and cyclothon organised by the Dawoodi Bohra community to mark World Health Week 2026, which attracted more than 500 participants, the majority being young people.

The initiative sought to raise awareness on the growing burden of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are increasingly linked to sedentary living and poor health habits.
Participants engaged in various fitness activities while also benefiting from free medical screenings, underscoring the importance of early detection and routine health checks.

Organisers emphasised that empowering young people with health knowledge and access to preventive care is crucial in reversing the rising trend of non-communicable diseases.
The event also demonstrated how simple, consistent lifestyle choices can significantly reduce long-term health risks, while fostering stronger community involvement in public health.

With Kenya facing a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, such youth-driven initiatives are being viewed as vital in reducing pressure on the healthcare system and promoting a healthier, more informed population.
