Michael Carrick has called on Manchester United to maintain composure and leverage their return to Old Trafford to jumpstart their Premier League campaign when they host Ipswich Town, following an unexpected opening-day defeat to Hull City.
Addressing the media at Carrington ahead of United’s first home fixture of the campaign, Carrick dismissed early-season panic, emphasizing that the squad remains unified inside their internal “bubble.” The United head coach insisted that a single frustrating result would not derail the broader trajectory of the team or alter their long-term vision.
“It’s one game,” Carrick said. “It’s the first game of the season, so it’s disappointing enough and it hurts, of course it does. But it’s one game — it doesn’t change the whole course of the direction the team or the football club is going in. We’ll stay calm, stay in the bubble, and focus on next week. Inside, we are hurting. The boys know we need to get better, but it won’t knock us.”
The dressing room sentiment reflects a similar determination. Defender Luke Shaw candidly characterized the opening performance as a harsh “smack in the face,” acknowledging that the squad was bitterly disappointed but fully intent on delivering an emphatic response in front of their home supporters.
Carrick also provided a comprehensive squad update ahead of the weekend. United will be forced to wait for the official debut of high-profile summer signee Carlos Baleba. The £70 million midfielder, acquired from Brighton, has been sidelined for two to three weeks with a minor ankle issue picked up in pre-season. Carrick indicated that the club aims to have the midfielder fit around the September international break.
Conversely, midfielder Mason Mount has successfully overcome a hamstring strain to return to full squad training and is available for selection. Winger Amad Diallo, however, remains sidelined with a longer-term injury.
The manager confirmed that key international players Lisandro Martínez, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo are now fully in contention to start after building up peak match fitness. Carrick also took time to highlight the club’s youth pipeline, praising 15-year-old talent JJ Gabriel for his remarkable physical adaptation and impressive performances for the Under-21 side against Ipswich’s youth team.
The fixture arrives during an event-filled period for United. Off the pitch, captain Bruno Fernandes was named PFA Player of the Year, while the club discovered its UEFA Champions League league-phase schedule, featuring ties against Bayern Munich, AS Roma, and RB Leipzig.
Despite these distractions, Carrick insisted that peripheral developments cannot divert attention from the primary objective of securing three points at home.
“We want a good performance and a win, obviously,” Carrick concluded. “First home game of the season, it’s the one we look forward to and the supporters coming. Massively looking forward to the game. We had a setback last week and we want to get back to playing well and winning football matches.”
