Supply us with quality feeds, sexed semens, Kiambu dairy farmers urge county and national gov’t

Dairy farmers in Kiambu County have called upon both the National and County governments to improve the dairy sector by supplying them with quality feeds and sexed semens which has been a challenge for decades affecting milk production.

According to Joanne Atian’g, who is in charge of dairy sector in the Ministry of Livestock, farmers are exposed to poor genetics and low quality feeds. She, however, assured the farmers the government is addressing the challenges to organise the industry.

Kiambaa Dairy Cooperative Society Chairperson Peris Wanjiru said poor quality standards of animal feeds have stagnated milk production, urging the government to evaluate the quality of products used to manufacture feeds.

Dr. Annette Sekempei said aflatoxin has become a challenge to the dairy sector. Kiambu County is one of the affected counties due to poor handling of raw materials.

Dr. Paul Mutugi, head of procurement and extensions services, said the main challenge is the process of maintaining quality standards of milk due to few coolers where they are forced to traverse distances seeking the services.
